Theatre Artists among Laureates of Lithuanian National Culture and Art Awards

The Ministry of Culture announced six names of the laureates of the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Awards of the year 2010. The names of theatre director Povilas Mataitis and set designer Dalia Lidija Mataitienė were among the laureates.They were awarded for their lifetime merits while revealing the depths of the Lithuanian folklore both in Lithuania and abroad and showing the harmony of folk traditions and modern scenography. Singer Virgilijus Kęstutis Noreika was awarded for the best vocal technique and inexhaustible talent.

Since 1989 the Lithuanian National Culture and Art Awards have been granted for the most significant works created during the last five years by Lithuanian artists as well as the artists from the World Lithuanian Community. Not more than six National Culture and Art Awards are given away every year. Each award amounts to 104,000 Litas and is granted for lifetime merits to the culture and art of Lithuania.

    85 years ago, the State theatre in Kaunas housed the premiere of the first professional ballet performance ”Coppélia” by Leo Delibes. On December 3, the Lithuanian Culture Research Institute organized an international scientific conference to mark the anniversary of the ballet.
