Eimuntas Nekrošius, one of Lithuania's most renowned theatre directors, has passed away on November 20. The famous director died at the age of 65. It is a huge loss for Lithuania and its culture, for European theatre culture.
Eimuntas Nekrošius was born in 1952 November 21 in Pažobris village (Raseiniai reg.). He graduated from the Lunacharski Theatre Institute in Moscow in 1978. He worked at the State Theatre for Youth in Vilnius and at the Drama Theatre in Kaunas. In 1980 he returned to the Vilnius Theatre, where he collaborated in several productions: "The Square", "Pirosmani, Pirosmani..." (1981), "Love and Death in Verona" by Antanėlis and Geda (1982), "Uncle Vania" by Chekhov (1986) and "The Nose" by Gogol (1991). All his performances have been held at festivals in Lithuania and the Baltic States.
In 1994, Nekrošius was awarded the Director of the Year of the Union of Theatres of Lithuania, and the Union of Theatres in Europe awarded him the Prize for New European Theatre Realities. In 1997 Nekrošius created one of his most successful productions, "Hamlet" by Shakespeare, which was played in almost all major European festivals and won many awards.
In 1998 she created the Meno Fortas studio theatre for which he worked as an artistic director. In 1999 he directed "Macbeth" by Shakespeare, and in 2001, "Othello", which had its world premiere in Venice. In 2002 he directed his first opera, "Macbeth" by Verdi, at the Teatro Comunale in Florence. In 2003, Nekrošius organized "The Seasons", based on the epic poem by the great Lithuanian writer Kristijonas Donelaitis and "Cherry Orhard" by Chekhov, premiered in Moscow, a show praised by the Russian critics as the most memorable production of Chekhov's work . of the last ten years.
