In August 15 - 17  Tchaikovsky's best-loved opera Eugene Onegin is coming to the Edinburgh International Festival together with opera world superstar Asmik Grigorian. Lithuanian soprano was recently awarded Female Singer of the Year in 2019 in the International Opera Awards, as well as Best Leading Role at the Austrian Music Theatre Awards 2019.

On July 19th Asmik opened the first night of BBC Proms 2019 performing the soprano part in the colossal Glagolitic Massby Janáček. Now, she will be taking the iconic role of Tatyana in Barrie Kosky's directed Eugene Onegin. Playful, radical and perceptive, Kosky is one of the most renowned directors working in opera today.

This season's Eugene Onegin marks the return of German opera company Komische Oper Berlin and brings its recently appointed Music Director Ainārs Rubiķis. Latvian-born conductor plans for his first Komische Oper season include Die Tote Stadt, Zauberflote, The Love for Three Oranges and more.

Founded in 1947, the International Edinburgh Festival will present some of the finest performers and ensembles from the worlds of dance, opera, music and theatre for three weeks in August.

The event will take place in Festival Theatre, 13-29 Nicolson Street, Edinburgh, EH8 9FT.

  • A Season Without Drama

If there were some remarkable and important performances this season, they did not turn into events. <...> This theatre season was without empathy, but it was accompanied by empathy for the theatre itself. Will the next season be the same?
